Fs image is snapshot of state of file system.when the namenode starts up it reads fs image file as its starting point & then applies any edits from log & then starts listenting to data node ( actually it is maintained in memory of namenode).

The entire file system namespace, including the mapping of blocks to the files and file system properties,is stored in a file called the fs image.Mapping of blocks to the file is the part of fsimage.
